| LSU Tiger Marching Band - "The Golden
Band from Tigerland"
The
LSU Tiger Marching Band is the largest and most visible single organization on
campus with a closed membership of 325 students. Recognized nationally for its outstanding achievements by the John Philip Sousa Foundation in 2002, the Tiger Band is comprised of students from
all over the LSU campus. Even though Tiger Band members display a wealth of musical
talent, we desire players who possess a strong sense of dedication and pride in
their work. Approximately 80% of Tiger Band members are majoring outside of music.
Tiger Band is an accredited one-hour course that meets Tuesday through Friday
from 3:50 to 5:20 pm. Participation involves less time than most high school band
rehearsals. Auditions for Tiger Band begin in February and continue through the
beginning of our preseason band camp which is the week prior to the start of classes
for the fall semester. However, we like to have all interested students audition
for Tiger Band by July 1st, so we can forward pertinent information about Tiger
Band and our other concert ensembles to you in July. All students selected for
membership in the LSU Tiger Marching Band (including Colorguard and Golden Girls),
must be registered as full-time students in the fall semester (12 semester hours).
There are no fees required for membership and the University pays for all road
trips and uniform costs (except dry cleaning and white band shoes--all Tiger Band
members buy the same type shoe from the Band Department.) All Tiger Band members
receive a $1000.00 scholarship for their participation. In order to continue to
receive this yearly award, Tiger Band members must continue to be registered as
full-time students and must maintain a 2.0 cumulative grade point average. Students
who enter LSU in the summer immediately after graduation from high school must
have a 2.0 cumulative average by the conclusion of the summer term in order to
be eligible for Tiger Band.
Most all of the instruments for Tiger Band
are available for use at no cost to the student. Woodwind and brass players audition
for Tiger Band by playing the chromatic scale and a couple of major scales in
addition to a prepared piece which you provide. This can be a solo, etude, honor
band audition material, etc. You do not need a pianist. The entire audition takes
approximately fifteen minutes and is fairly informal. Students not be majoring
in music can audition anytime between February 1st and July 1st. Music majors
and minors who are accepted into a School of Music studio are automatically invited to our
preseason Band Camp. Contact the LSU Band Office via email or phone at (225) 578-2384
to schedule your audition. If you are an out-of-state student, and are unable
to come to campus for an audition, we will accept a compact disc or cassette tape
of your playing.
IMPORTANT! Once accepted to LSU, we ask all incoming
freshmen to schedule their orientation and testing prior to the week before classes,
which is part of our Tiger Band Preseason Band Camp. Please contact the University
for available dates for these sessions. Tiger Band Preseason Camp generally begins two weeks before fall classes begin.
Final selection of the 2010 Tiger Band will occur during the Preseason Band Camp in August. Their first
performance will be for LSU's annual "Chancellor's
Welcome," an event which welcomes all new students to campus.
Percussionists
audition for the Tiger Band Drumline two days prior to the start of Preseason Band Camp in August. The audition consists of prepared materials which
are distributed to all prospective members in July. Contact the Band Office to
add your name to the mailing list. We also offer Drumline workshops in July
and August. Check our band web calendar for dates.
Auditions for the
LSU Golden Girls danceline, and Tiger Band Colorguard are held in the spring each year.
